DoT allows service providers to initiate machine-to-machine communications

The Department of Telecom, on 17th January amended telecom license to allow service providers to start machine-to-machine communication- a key driver to facilitate 5G adoption in the country.

The DoT had previously issued M2M guidelines in May 2018. However, the clause pertaining to this provisioning was included in the telecom licences.

In this licence amendment, DoT has incorporated M2M with pan-India permit, limited to circle level and district level.

Telecom operators interested in providing M2M services across India shall have to deposit an entry fee of Rs 30 lakh, performance bank guarantee (PBG) of Rs 40 lakh and financial bank guarantee (FBG) of Rs 2 lakh.

The circle level category entry fee has been fixed at Rs 2 lakh, PBG Rs 2 lakh and FBG at Rs 20,000. The entry fee, PBG and FBG for district level shall be Rs 20,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 2,000, respectively.

Clause pertaining to the provisioning of audiotex or interactive voice response service (IVRS) as part of telecom licence has also been provided.

The amendments have been made applicable across all categories of licences.
