Prof. N. L. Mitra is a Partner at Fox Mandal, Bengaluru. Author of more than 11 books and over 200 research papers, he is a highly regarded legal luminary. He has functioned as the Chairman of various important financial committees of the country and played an advisory role in important judicial reformation. He is a visiting professor at various National Law Schools and Advisor to IIT Kharagpur. He is acknowledged as an expert in conveyancing, market operations and investment law and practice.
Prof. Mitra was the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Market Studies/ Research Projects, Competition Commission of India. He headed several chairs in various universities and was the vice-chancellor of National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru (1997-2000) and Chancellor of KIIT University. He was also the Founder Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious law institute in India- National Law University, Jodhpur. In addition, Prof. Mitra has been associated with many leading institutions, including the RBI, SEBI, GIC etc., in various capacities.
Prof. Mitra is a life member of the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) and India Law Institute (ILI), a former member of the Executive Committee of Common Wealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) and a former invitee to the American Law Deans Association and American Bar Association.
He is also a member of the Legal Education Committee of the Bar Council of India. Moreover, he has been involved with several research projects on financial sectors and infrastructural legal reforms with the Harvard University, Asia Development Bank, UNDP and the World Bank. He is actively involved in drafting several legislations pertaining to the infrastructural sector, markets, including reforms in banking regulations, bankruptcy laws, financial frauds, investor protection and fiscal responsibility. To his credit, he has published over eleven books and more than 200 research papers in national and international journals and law reports.
He has conducted research on various contemporary issues like Gujarat Earthquake, the suicide of farmers, pesticide manufacture and distribution system etc. Prof. Mitra very actively supported the legal reform in International Harmonization Law, International Criminal Law, and armed conflict. He has advised the International Red Cross Society and VNHCR. Prof. Mitra gave the thematic address on the International Criminal Justice System in the Afro-Asian Consultative Committee Meeting in 1999 in Tehran.
He was the initiator of the Environmental Law Reform and Comprehensive protective system in 1999-2000 formed by the World Bank and was the National Committee Member certified by the Ministry of Environment. Prof. Mitra introduced the Distant Learning in Law in India with the Master Degree in Business Laws through Global Education.
