On March 23, 2023, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill, 2022.
The Bill, which seeks to ban online gambling and regulate online gaming, was earlier returned by the state Governor, Shri. RN Ravi. Moreover, in 2021, the Madras High Court struck down the Tamil Nadu Gaming and Police Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021, which banned online betting games, holding the same as unconstitutional. Thereafter, the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Ordinance, 2022, was promulgated by the Governor on October 3, 2022.
Citing the large number of suicides committed by people after suffering major losses in online gambling, the Chief Minister, Shri. MK Stalin moved the Bill, which was later adopted unanimously.
