The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hyderabad, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deal with doping in sports. The objective behind the collaboration is to facilitate testing capacity in the country, create awareness regarding nutritional supplements and the risks involved in their consumption, suggest dope-free nutritional supplements and boost research opportunities in anti-doping. It also aims to ensure that the best marketing and distribution practices are followed in providing nutritional supplements in India.
The collaboration is expected to help athletes make well-informed choices when selecting and incorporating nutritional supplements into their diets. This is proposed to be achieved by creating awareness amongst the athletes about the harmful substances found in nutritional supplements, which will make them realise the adverse effects of said substances on their health and performance in the long run.
As per the press release dated February 15, 2023, the dissemination of data and generation of information would be powered by NIPER, Hyderabad, through their testing laboratories.
