The International Olympic Committee confirmed that Singapore will host the inaugural Olympic Esports week between June 22 and 25, 2023. The Olympic Esports Week is a four-day festival showcases the newest technologies through panel discussions, educational sessions, and show matches. It will highlight the best virtual sports, including hybrid physical and simulated sports (SNOC). Esports was dropped as a medal event from the 2026 Commonwealth Games earlier in October.
Esports entering the Olympic leagues marks the next key move in increasing the development of virtual sports and participating further in competitive sports. However, concerns relating to doping have been consistently raised, affecting the integrity of competitions. The committee will have to overcome implementational challenges pertaining to doping regulations to enable free and fair competition in this emerging sporting industry.
