Simona Halep Sues Quantum Nutrition Days After CAS Hearing Concludes

Days after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing pertaining to the four-year suspension imposed on Simona Halep for breach of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP) concluded, she sued Quantum Nutrition, alleging that its nutritional supplement resulted in her doping ban.

Halep’s first breach concerned the presence of a WADA-prohibited substance, Roxadustat in the testing sample collected at the US Open in August 2022. She was thereafter charged with yet another doping offence for irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport (ABP). In September 2023, the Independent Tribunal ordered the suspension due to two breaches of the TADP, operative w.e.f. the date of┬áthe provisional suspension, i.e., October 7, 2022. This decision was later challenged vide an appeal before CAS.

The player has reportedly claimed more than $10 million in damages from the supplement maker. It has been asserted that the supplement she consumed contained Roxadustat, but this fact was not mentioned on the supplement’s label.

The CAS hearing concluded on February 9, 2024. The CAS Panel will deliberate on the matter and the arbitral award will soon be drawn up.
