Rowing Federation of India: Election Results to be Declared After Court Nod

The Rowing Federation of India (RFI) elections were held on February 25, 2024, but the results will not be announced till the Delhi High Court issues further orders in the matter pending before it.[1]

The Delhi Rowing Association earlier filed a writ petition before the Delhi High Court, asserting that the RFI was not compliant with the National Sports Development Code, 2011, and the judgment dated August 16, 2022, of the Division Bench of the Delhi High Court in Rahul Mehra v. Union of India and Ors.[2]

It was noted that the petitioner association was not eligible to participate in the RFI election process as it admitted that its own constitution was not in compliance with the Sports Code and the abovementioned judgment. Thereafter, the writ petition was allowed to be treated as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and was heard by the Acting Chief Justice.

Accepting the assurances provided by the RFI that it would adopt the road map presented by the petitioner, the Court allowed the elections to take place vide order dated February 23, 2024. However, it was made clear that the counting of the votes and the announcement of the result would not take place till further orders of the Court. Moreover, the Court permitted the existing management to continue till further orders, in view of the upcoming Olympic Games.

The matter will be heard next on July 25, 2024.
