The Punjab Sports Department has launched the ‘Olympian Balbir Singh Senior Scholarship Scheme’ for eminent national players of the State. The move aims to encourage players from the State to perform better at national and international sporting events.
Players are often reluctant to pursue sports as a viable career owing to financial concerns and constraints. The financial support extended to the players through the scheme would now allow players to dedicate more time and efforts to their training and performance at international tournaments, enabling them to bring laurels to the country.
Under this scheme, a total amount of Rs. 12.50 crore has been set aside to be awarded as a stipend to medal winners regardless of gold, silver or bronze. The Government has also announced its plans for releasing a new sports policy that will focus on the infrastructure and resources needed to further promote sports in the State, along with a health insurance and sports equipment policy.
The developments are part of the “Khedan Watan Punjab Deyan” initiative by the Punjab Government aimed at creating a sports-friendly environment in the State.
