Los Angeles 2028: IOC Approves Event Programme Principles

The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Executive Board has approved the event programme principles for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028, which are set to commence on July 14, 2028. The framework was put forward by the IOC Olympic Programme Commission (OPC).

This decision was taken at a meeting held in the last week of November 2023, in Paris. The principles are athlete-focused, cost and complexity-conscious, gender-equal and globally appealing. It is envisaged that only existing venues and fields of play would be used, with no major adaptations. Further, it is sought to maintain “50% female participation or increase to 50% female participation on a sport and discipline level”.

When it comes to the discipline programme, the same was finalised by the IOC Executive Board on October 13, 2023. On the same day, five additional games including Cricket, baseball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash were proposed by the LA28 Organising Committee to be included in the programme for LA28 and this proposal was approved days later at the 141st session of the IOC upon review by the OPC and submission by the IOC Executive Board.
