Lane Infringement: Gulveer Singh Stripped of Gold Medal in Asian Indoor Championships

Gulveer Singh was stripped of the gold medal he won at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 held in Tehran on account of lane infringement.

The athlete finished first in the men’s 3000m event on February 19, 2024, after clocking in 8 minutes 07.48 seconds. But he lost out on the medal shortly afterwards. The Athletics Federation of India‚Äôs appeal, filed later, was dismissed. Jalil Naseri of Iran, who won the bronze medal, was also disqualified. Subsequently, Nursultan Keneshbekov of Kyrgyzstan was awarded the gold medal. While Seyed Amir Zamanpour of Iran received the silver medal, Naseri’s place was taken by Frolovskiy of Kazakh.

The provisions pertaining to lane infringement are contained in the World Athletics Technical Rules. For instance, in all races that run-in lanes, athletes have to stay within their allocated lane from start to finish. The said Rules specify the scenarios in which the athlete can be disqualified for lane infringement. They also carve out certain exceptions.
