IOC Withdraws Recognition of International Boxing Association

In a remote meeting held on June 22, 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session decided to withdraw the International Boxing Association (IBA) recognition. This step was taken based on the recommendation of the Committee’s Executive Board.

The IBA was formerly the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur (AIBA). Its recognition as the governing body for boxing was suspended in 2019 as per the rules of the Olympic Charter. In December 2021, the Committee set out certain conditions to be followed by the IBA for lifting the said suspension regarding concerns in the areas of governance, finance, referees and judges. However, the Association did not comply with these conditions as determined under the IOC Comprehensive Report dated June 2, 2023.

The decision of the Committee’s Executive Board to accept this report and recommend the withdrawal of IBA’s recognition was challenged before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which dismissed the plea days before the IOC’s extraordinary session rubberstamped the recommendation.
