On February 24, 2023, which marks one year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the International Olympics Committee (IOC) issued a statement welcoming the UN Resolution to bring lasting peace to Ukraine. Further, on said date, the IOC hoisted the Ukrainian and the UN flags along with the Olympic flag in front of the Olympic House in Switzerland.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the said resolution in its 11th Emergency Session in February 2023. It called upon member states and international bodies to support and engage in diplomatic efforts to secure a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine” consistent with the UN Charter. The resolution is similar to and in accordance with Resolution A/77L.28 titled “Sport as an enabler of Sustainable Development”, adopted during the 77th Session of the UNGA back in December 2022, which states that the Olympics and Paralympic games are unifying sources to bring the world together in peaceful competition.
