Import Duty on Mobile Phone Components Brought Down to 10%

To facilitate the export of mobile phones, the Central Government has brought down the import duty applicable on certain mobile phone components from 15% to 10%.

The same was notified by the Ministry of Finance two days before the announcement of the Interim Budget 2024. As per the notification, the import duty has been reduced on goods used in the manufacture of cellular mobile phones, including battery covers, front, middle and back covers, main lens, GSM Antenna, SIM socket, screws, etc. Further, there would be no import duty on the inputs or parts used to manufacture such goods.

Last month, the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) released a report which highlighted that the tariffs imposed on mobile phone components by India were the highest as compared to those applicable in competing nations, thereby limiting exports. The said report called for tariff reforms to “bolster India’s competitiveness in global manufacturing and to strengthen its position in the global electronics market”.
