Equestrian Federation of India Reinstated Ahead of Paris Olympics

In a judgment dated May 29, 2024, the Delhi High Court reinstated the Executive Committee of the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) in view of the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.[1]

Citing the expiry of the tenure of the office bearers and expressing concerns over their conduct, on May 21, the Court directed the appointment of an ad-hoc committee, comprising a chairperson and two members, to supervise the administration of the EFI. It was held that the Chairperson would be paid a sum of Rs. 5 Lakh per month as an honorarium (besides secretarial expenses) and the two members would be paid a fee of Rs. 1 Lakh per month. The decision was challenged by the EFI, which also contended that it was not feasible to make such payments considering the Federation’s annual revenue. Further, it was stated that the elected members worked on a “pro bono basis”.

This order from May 21 has been suspended till the pending writ petitions are disposed of by the Single Judge Bench.

The matter will be heard next on July 2.
