Cricket, along with baseball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash, are set to be included in the programme for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028. The proposal of the LA28 Organising Committee for the inclusion of these additional sports was approved at the 141st Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The only time the sport of cricket was played in the Olympics was during the 1900 Summer Olympics held in Paris. However, flag football and squash would be making their Olympic debut at the LA28. There was no discussion on the inclusion of boxing in the programme considering that the IOC withdrew recognition of the International Boxing Association in June 2023.
Thomas Bach, IOC President, expressed, “The choice of these five new sports is in line with the American sports culture and will showcase iconic American sports to the world while bringing international sports to the United States. These sports will make the Olympic Games LA28 unique”. He added, “Their inclusion will allow the Olympic Movement to engage with new athlete and fan communities in the US and globally”.
