Apex Court Disposes Contempt Proceedings Instituted Against IOA

In the case of Rahul Mehra v Rajeev Mehta & Ors., the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India disposed of the contempt petition post clarification by the Solicitor General that the directions issued by the Apex Court on October 10 pertaining to the new constitution of the Indian Olympic Association (“IOA”) have been complied with.

The Court held that since the new constitution, as drawn up by Hon’ble Mr. Justice L Nageswara Rao in consultation with the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia, has been adopted by the General Assembly of the IOA and any deviation would be implemented only if permitted by the Court; there was no reason to pursue the exercise of the contempt jurisdiction.

The Court further reiterated that the election schedule indicated for November 3, 2022, must be duly observed to complete the election process. The election to the IOA executive council is scheduled to be held on December 10.
